Review: Oh Obviously (Darcy Burdock #4) by Laura Dockrill
Ten-year-old Darcy Burdock is one of life's noticers. She sees the extraordinary in the everyday, and the wonder in the world around her.
This is Darcy's fourth story, and the Burdock family are facing a series of disasters. Mum and Dad are having serious money worries. Darcy's granny (the one she doesn't like as much as her main most important grandma) has come to stay, and is snapping at everyone. Pork the cat's real owner has turned up, and wants to take him away. And to top it all off, Darcy is dreading her school sleepover - especially as she's the owner of the world's most ugly, stupid, babyish pyjamas.
Can the power of Darcy's colourful, wild, glittering imagination turn all her troubles around?
My thoughts
I love Darcy and her fabulous ways and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book.
What I love about a Darcy book is that while they are really funny and Darcy and her quirks are entertaining there is a real heart to the book and the story it has to tell.
This book looks at issues in a thoughtful and poignant way. Firstly it looks at loss through the dead of a grandparent and how that can make to reflect about the role they played and are no longer playing in your life. Secondly the story covers the issue of what makes a family. Darcy's mother was adopted as a child and the observations Darcy makes about her grandmother (despite not liking her all that much) and how she took her mother in are really heartfelt. The story also looks at the family as they are going through some financial difficulties. This is increasingly the reality for so many families in the UK and isn't always acknowledged even though they have food and a roof over their head the impact it can have on the children of the family when classmates are showing off the expensive things their families can afford to give to them in a consumer driven society.
Just as brilliant as I thought it would be and highly recommended.
